2024-2025 Teacher of the Year - Commerce Middle School

Mrs. Mullis attended Berry College on a theatre scholarship, but returned to Georgia College & State University in her hometown of Milledgeville where she earned a BS in Psychology. After working as the executive director of two different non-profit organizations for a few years, her desire to teach was once again ignited, so she returned to school to get her Masters in Education. She is now in her 26th year of teaching. Mrs. Mullis holds certificates in special education, elementary education, middle grades Reading and middle grades Language Arts, emotional behavioral disorders, ESOL, and gifted. She has taught in two states, taught grades 2nd-12th, and worked in four school systems. When she joined Commerce Middle School in 2009, she knew she had found her home. She has worked in all grade levels at CMS and has served as both a special education teacher and English teacher over these past 15 years. In addition, she has held various leadership roles in the school, including grade-level chair, English department chair, Special Education department chair and sponsor of the Jr. Beta Club. She has sponsored the drama club for the past 8 years. In teaching, she has found that relationships yield results; She believes that when teachers focus on connection before content, students are more willing to be engaged and put forth the work needed to be successful. She has been married to her husband Bryan for 25 years and has two children--Kennedy, a sophomore at UNG, and Sawyer, a sophomore at CHS.
