Gifted Services

Philosophy of Gifted Education

Commerce City Schools will endeavor to provide a challenging academic program for those students identified and enrolled as gifted under the current local and State of Georgia regulations.  This specific program will make efforts to determine the strengths of each student in the four areas of mental ability, achievement, creativity, and motivation. Further, the program will be designed to enhance these individual strength areas in order to maximize the potential of each student.

Definition of Giftedness

The Commerce City School System defines a gifted student as one who meets the current local and State of Georgia guidelines for gifted placement.  The gifted student demonstrates a high degree of intellectual and/or creative ability(ies), exhibits an exceptionally high degree of motivation, and/or excels in specific academic fields, and who needs special instruction and/or special ancillary services to achieve at levels commensurate with his or her abilities.  The gifted student exhibits superior performance or skill, as defined in State regulations, in any three of the four areas of mental ability, achievement, creativity, or motivation.

"In order to qualify for gifted education services, a student shall meet criteria established by the State Board of Education in the following four areas:  mental ability, achievement, creativity, and motivation.  Any responsible person with knowledge of a student's advanced and/or accelerated educational needs may refer a student for evaluation to determine eligibility for gifted education.  For additional information, please contact the Gifted Program Coordinator, Dawn Gary, at 706-336-8990.
